Keyboard and Mouse Cleaning/Compliance Tool for Shared Computers
Summary
Go back to schools and libraries knowing that your shared computer workspaces are clean. SafeKey provides an affordable safe and easy solution for sanitizing shared workspaces in the age of COVID-19. It is ideal for computer labs, libraries, or anywhere that PC workspaces are shared.
Prototype software was developed to evaluate the concept, and solicit feedback from potential users. If utility is confirmed, a lightspeed effort to complete the development and test the software under use conditions will be undertaken, with the goal of a releasable product on a timeline that could support facilities in just a few weeks. Please refer to the short demo video below for initial product design and feature details:
Key Features
Supervisor/teacher dashboard permits fine-grained control and status monitoring, but can run unattended
Cleaning can be automated (tied to logins and logouts) and/or triggered by supervisor/teacher
Cleaning protocols can be adjusted to suit site environment and track latest public health recommendations
Cleaning tasks can be either delegated to students/users with minimal training, handled by staff, or a mix
All active surfaces are monitored to confirm adequate attention is paid to each key and mouse control
Equipment wipe-downs can be done quickly, but with confidence in coverage
Quick implementation in multi-PC environment
Free Evaluation
In anticipation of making the SafeKey Software available in a compressed timeframe we are preparing a brief, no-cost beta test to confirm compatibility with school and library needs, systems, and workflows. If sufficient interest is demonstrated, registrants will be contacted for further details of application and schedule. Beta sites will receive free upgrades and support for 1 year.
Beta participation requirements:

Interested, but not located near Pittsburgh? We're eager to make SafeKey available to everyone who can benefit, please let us know HERE.
Motivation
This project is a bit of a departure for iGrok, a medical device research and development company that develops a wide array of technologies (think cancer treatments, medical imaging analysis, radiation therapy treatment monitoring, and the like). iGrok developers got wind from local school districts of the particular challenges facing reuse of computers, with their high-touch keyboard and mouse surfaces handed off from one troop of students to the next every time the bell rings, and were eager to contribute in even a small way. Enabling a student/user role in cleaning, while maintaining verified compliance, seemed like an opportunity to make life a little easier for the thousands of schools and libraries across the country struggling to offer the best possible services, with tight financial constraints, and without compromising the health and safety of those they serve, or their staff.
Thank you for your interest!
